Two journals describe trips in 1849 and 1854 from Rushville to California, and a return journey in 1856 by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Doyle describes the routes and his experiences from 1849 to 1851 at Long's Bar, Oregon Bar, Union Bar, in the Feather River Valley. The third volume contains ten letters to his parents and brothers Manville, James, and Sam from 1849 to 1851.
